St. Mary’s 20th Anniversary

As we approach our 20th anniversary St. Mary’s remains the only AIDS specialty nursing home in Harlem. Although there have been gains made in the battle against HIV/AIDS we continue to struggle to satisfy the increasing demands for care while facing diminishing resources. Minority communities remain disproportionately affected by this crisis and zip code 10027, St. Mary’s zip code, has the highest infection rate in Manhattan. Central Harlem has the second highest infection rate in New York City and we proudly provide cutting edge medical care, comprehensive social services, psychiatric care, therapeutic recreation, physical therapy and complementary therapies such as acupuncture.

World AIDS Day at St Mary’s 2011

World AIDS Day this year is about “Getting to Zero.” Zero New HIV Infections.
Zero Discrimination and Zero AIDS Related Deaths. “Zero New HIV Infections” and “Zero Discrimination” are equally as likely to spark high impact events from small scale community vigils to nation wide events using the universally recognised shape of zeros and the power of light to get life and death issues the attention they deserve.

For December 1st, 2011 right up until 2015 it’s envisioned that
different regions and groups will each year chose one or all of the
Zeros that best addresses their situation.

Hidden Talents

Love Is Calling Here at St. Mary’s we don’t miss an opportunity to get creative. We show off our talents time and time again at talent showcases. We’ve taken interior decorating to a new level with resident and client made graphic arts displays. But it’s not just about showing off. It’s about getting better and with our staff of trained LCATs (Licensed Creative Arts Therapists) we use everything from music & art to dance and drama to promote mental health. These psycho-therapeutic techniques are especially beneficial to our clients and residents who do not do as well with talk therapy. In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month Here is a song written in Spanish by one of our clients. Mantente tu cabeza en alto arriba

Springing Forward

After the long winter St. Mary’s is back in the swing of Spring.  Our March Madness began with outings to see the Knick’s at Madison Square Garden and the Delfonics at the Beacon Theater.  The Rites of Spring continue with an outing to the Universoul Circus and the Broadway Musical Memphis.  But the really good news is that we are on target to meet our goal of 1100 Care Planned visits.  That’s right folks!  St. Mary’s Clients have been following their care plans, attending their groups and having tons of fun outings this month.  So we commend them on a job well done and we will continue to aspire in April.
